Found some information on this house. It was a Manor House designed by Michel Thibault in 1795. (see link below)
The Ghost of Tokai At one of Petrus Eksteen's festive New Year's Eve banquets, a young gentleman, thought to be the son of the house, mounted the precipitous stoep steps of the Manor House on horseback for a wager. On their descent, to the horror of onlookers, horse and rider slipped and fell to their deaths.
Now, on New Year's Eve, some say, the pair can be heard cantering through the forest to repeat their foolhardy bet
I found this information on a most informative web site by Peter Groves, you can visit it at this link: http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Trails/6676/tokai.htm

I like this! The closed gate really gives it a forboding feel. I'm glad I'm on this side of the gate!

@Laurie: Thanks Laurie, yeah me too. I'm thinking of doing a full moon shot of this house, but I have not been able to find anyone brave enough to go with me.
The gate really does add a "ghostly" feel to the shot ... beautiful shades of green!

What an impressive building, it's sad to see it in this state. From the story it seems to have had a very long history. I don't think that I would go there at night, Ghost or no Ghost :) Will go and check out the link now.

What a fascinating story. The photograph on its own is mysterious and eerie, but put together with the ghostly tale, it is a little gem!

I enjoy that you took this picture through the gate. The cadenas is the only thing that seems new...

Great image, Graham. Love the building (especially the staircases on either side). It is sad to see it in such disrepair. Great composition and the addition of the gate. Love the mood of this.

By including the closed gates the house has got a somewhat sinister feel to it.

The compositional technique you've chosen here really does give this a forbidding atmosphere. Excellent idea.
